Affordable Care Act forum Thursday

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Baldwin County Democratic Committee will host a forum on the federal Affordable Care Act at 6 p.m. Thursday at Georgia College’s Peabody Auditorium.

Democratic Party Chairman Quentin T. Howell said the event is open to everyone.

“The Democratic Party of Georgia decided there are question marks from A to Z as it comes to the new Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare,” Howell said. “We wanted to provide a venue, where people could ask questions if they like it, hate it or don’t know if they should like or hate it. It’s a nice, open information session.”

The open forum applies to business owners, individuals and even local governments that still have lingering questions about the new reform.

State ACA marketplace navigator Harold Weber and insurance provider Dwayne Sentell are scheduled to attend and answer those questions.

Sentell brings another hands-on perspective beyond traversing the website.

“He’s one of our local insurance agents that’s federally certified to sell Obamacare along with other insurances,” Howell said.

Webb is currently a Health Navigator with Athens Neighborhood Health Center. During a 33-year career with Prudential and Aetna in systems and health plan management, Webb has seen the rise and fall of the HMO and managed care movements.

Open enrollment at the healthcare.gov marketplace began Oct. 1 and continues through March 31, 2014. Since the health care marketplace opened, the system has been met with a number of questions and website system setbacks. The local Democratic Party chairman said this session would “cut through the fairy tales and misbelief.”

“We need to know what the facts are. We feel it’s our responsibility to bring this information to the people. I think so much misinformation is purposely put out there that really clouds and fogs up what we actually need to know,” Howell said.
