Georgia authors converge on Milledgeville Saturday

MILLEDGEVILLE — Reading enthusiasts and writing buffs will have the opportunity to honor Georgia authors during the 2013 Georgia Literary Festival’s event this weekend.

“The Georgia Literary Festival is one of Georgia's premier book festivals and is sure to offer plenty of tourism for Milledgeville through book signings, readings, discussions and fun events,” said Sarah Hamil, outreach coordinator for the Twin Lakes Library System and one of the organizers helping put together the event. “We are honored that Milledgeville has been chosen to be the host town for the 2013 festival.”

Starting Saturday, Georgia authors, living and deceased, will be honored through readings, signings, lectures, tours and meet-and-greet opportunities.

The keynote speakers for the festival are Sean Hill and Judson Mitcham. Hill, a Milledgeville native, is currently the poet-in-residence at University of Alaska Fairbanks. Mitcham was named poet laureate of Georgia in 2012 and is presently the senior lecturer in English at Mercer University in Macon.

There will be three tracks for festival attendees to choose from Saturday — the literary track, the thriller track and the literary soul food track. More than 30 featured authors will be present, including Bret Lott, Amy Zipperer, Barry Reese, Renee Dodd, Sandra Worsham, Martin Lammon, Sarah Gordon, Allen Gee, Alice Friman, Anya Silver, David Muschell, Peter Selgin, Kevin Cantwell, Gregory Fraser, Man Martin, Eustace Palmer, Tom Kohler, Susan Earl, Tony Martin, Ruth Schowalter, Patti Digh, Nagueyalti Warren, Sean Taylor, Van Plexico, Andrea Judy, Bobby Nash and Alex Hughes.

Various events will also be ongoing throughout Saturday, including a vendor street fair downtown, Flannery O’Connor trolley tours, a Literary Libations Tour, Georgia’s Old Capital Museum Society auction at the Old Joiner’s Market, 110 N. Wayne St., Twin Lakes Library System book sale and author panels and presentations.

The Milledgeville Players will also present vignettes from “Smoke on the Mountain” by Alan Bailey with a live cast question and answer session.
