Drug task force arrests nine

MILLEDGEVILLE — Coinciding with the Saturday Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) efforts to collect unwanted or unused prescription pills, the Ocmulgee Drug Task Force (ODTF) did some local housekeeping this week.

Task force agents arrested nine individuals Thursday morning allegedly connected with a reported majority of Milledgeville’s illegal prescription pill market.

Cathy Butts, Charles Butts Jr., Cassandra Faye Butts, Ronald Lewis Curtis, Cameron Deshawn Veal, Patsy Young, Demetrius Harden, Eula Jones and Bonnie Mobley were brought into custody.

Eight were charged with sale of prescription pills, while one suspect, Harden, took a sale of cocaine charge.

Curtis is on federal probation currently awaiting sentencing in federal court for possible cocaine trafficking also.

The ODTF traveled to five different residences during the morning hours.

Along with supporting Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office deputies, the task force confiscated three vehicles, $2,000 cash and five large pill bottles.

The investigation began during the first part of August.

ODTF Commander Wesley Nunn said agents have bought $900 worth of Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Loratab and Xanax pills from the suspects.

The usual street value ranges from $10 to $20 per pill.

Nunn said what’s most bothersome is that the sellers likely got the pills paid for by government subsidies.

“We are out there buying them back. They are supplementing their income by this,” Nunn said.

One suspect allegedly admitted to earning up to $700 monthly, which she claimed supplemented her income.

Though the public perception may be that the task force is picking on helpless folks, agents caution residents that these pills lead to a tragic reality of addiction and even death around the community.

These arrests come at the perfect time for Saturday’s prescription pill take back event.

The ODTF along with the Milledgeville Police Department and the BCSO are taking back unwanted prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents can bring medications for disposal to MPD at 125 W. McIntosh St. or to the BCSO at 119 Old Monticello Road in Milledgeville. The service is free and anonymous.

Call the drug task force at 478-414-5997 to report suspicious drug activity.
