Mansion’s lecture series features Pulitzer Prize nominated author

MILLEDGEVILLE — The last story of the American Civil War comes to life as writer Charles McNair blends the historical fiction of Threadgill Pickett’s past with 1960s-influenced tall tale-telling of an epic journey north.

McNair will speak about his newly released novel “Pickett’s Charge” in the Old Governor’s Mansion’s Education Building at 6 p.m. Wednesday as part of the Mansion Lecture Series.

“We’re very excited to welcome Mr. McNair to campus,” said Matt Davis, curator at the mansion. “Visitors will hear about an interesting work of fiction. We invite the community to participate as it is free and open to the public.”

A comedy and tragedy, the book tells the story of Civil War veteran Threadgill Pickett, the last living Confederate soldier who starts a quest to Maine to kill the last living Union soldier.

“Mr. McNair is a highly regarded author who has a rising name in the literary realm,” Davis said. “Visitors interested in historical fiction will find this lecture very engaging and hear a wonderful story.”

McNair is the books editor and commentator for “Paste” magazine. His first novel, “Land O’ Goshen” was a nominee for the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1994. “Pickett’s Charge” has received critical praise from esteemed authors such as Charles Frazier and Mark Childress to Rosanne Cash and Anne Lamott.

“We’re appreciative to have Mr. McNair on campus which will benefit not only the Georgia College campus,” Davis said, “but the greater community at large.”

McNair will also share his thoughts on Georgia and the south’s rich literary heritage, what the Civil War means to him as a native of the state of Alabama and how the war’s legacy has influenced his writing.

A reception and book signing will follow the lecture.
