Sheriff’s Office investigating check fraud case

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Baldwin County Sheriffs Office is investigating a check fraud case involving fictitious checks written on MidSouth Credit Union accounts.

According to Capt. Brad King, the investigation was initiated about three weeks ago when a report came in on a fictitious check used at Walmart.

“We received a report that a man used a fictitious check from a MidSouth Credit Union account for purchases at a Walmart in north Georgia. He then returned to the store, told the clerk that he accidentally purchased the wrong items ... they refunded him the money that was written on the check for the purchases,” said King.

Detective Bobby Langford retrieved financial documents from Walmart stores and the MidSouth location in Macon. He has also viewed a surveillance video of the suspect using the checks to purchase items at a Canton area Walmart.

Although the suspect has not been identified, it is confirmed that he is using the stolen identity Mamadou Niang.

Langford’s investigation into store and MidSouth financial records has uncovered a significant number of fictitious checks used on accounts locally and in various other counties and states.

“So far we’ve found approximately $50,000 in checks and returns made on at least a dozen accounts in Baldwin County, and twice as many victims in Bibb, Crawford, Jones, Hancock, Monroe, Peach and Houston counties,” said Langford.

The investigation has also uncovered activity in at least five states in addition to Georgia with more information still coming in. Langford is in the process of meeting with law enforcement agencies from other counties that have reported the illegal check fraud activity to try and identify the individual before the case is turned over to the federal government.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office at 478-445-2552.
