Chief Justice speaks to Patriots

MILLEDGEVILLE — Baldwin County heard from Hugh Thompson, Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court, on Thursday, Sept. 5. The event was hosted by the Milledgeville Area Patriots and had about 65 locals in attendance.  

After a long and distinguished career as a judge, Justice Thompson was recently elected by his fellow Georgia Supreme Court Justices to the position of Chief Justice, a high, yet well-deserved, honor for the Milledgeville native.

Chief Justice Thompson gave a history lesson on Revolutionary War period of American history, with an emphasis on the importance of the Boston Tea Party. He indicated that the Boston Tea Party marked the point of no return between the rebellious North American colonists and the King and Parliament of England.

During a question and answer period the Chief Justice was acutely aware of the sensitivity of making overtly partisan comments and avoided making statements on some of the current events in the country's political arena. The Chief Justice did address issues related to Georgia and the concept of separation of powers established in the U.S. and Georgia State Constitutions. 

Guests were honored to have such a distinguished, accomplished and influential citizen visit the community and even more so since he is a native of Milledgeville/Baldwin County.
