Georgia College named Public College of Distinction

MILLEDGEVILLE —

Georgia College was one of only 48 institutions nationwide named to the 2013-2014 Public Colleges of Distinction list.

The website collegesofdistinction.com gives the designation to colleges and universities that excel in four distinctions: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes.

“Our designation on the Public Colleges of Distinction list shows that we focus on engaging our students and have faculty members who are completely committed to our mission,” said Dr. Kelli Brown, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “This ranking means that people outside our university have taken notice of Georgia College and the great education we offer.”

The data highlights Georgia College’s service learning to help students benefit others by applying classroom knowledge to real world experiences; The GIVE Center’s community service efforts; study abroad opportunities; and the Georgia Education Mentorship (GEM) program that involves leaders from a variety of business and professional fields in mentoring students.

College counselors from high schools, college administrative members and the Colleges of Distinction selection team nominated each institution on the list.

To compile the list, Colleges of Distinction uses information from college admission experts around the country. They also interview senior administration, faculty, alumni and current students at each nominated college. Feedback is gathered from administrators at other colleges and high school counselors across the country. The team also visits each college to get a feel for student engagement and quality of teaching as they compile the list.

Data including graduation rates and classroom size are also used through the process.

The website is a free service for college-bound students, counselors and parents offering a variety of information about colleges.

For more information, visit the Colleges of Distinction website.
