MILLEDGEVILLE — Nearly all of the current Milledgeville City Council members have qualified for reelection as the qualifying period continued Wednesday.
As of press time Wednesday, incumbent Denese Shinholster qualified for reelection to the council District 3 seat. Newcomer Phillip Smith also qualified for the District 3 seat Monday.
Newcomer Daniel McDonald also qualified Wednesday for the District 5 seat on the Milledgeville City Council, currently held by Richard Mullins. Mullins qualified for reelection Tuesday.
Incumbent Mayor Richard Bentley also qualified during the qualifying period Tuesday.
A new candidate for the Milledgeville City Council District 2 seat, Andrew Ross Sheppard qualified Monday. The seat is presently held by Jeanette Walden. Walden also qualified to seek reelection to another term.
GMC Board of Trustees incumbents Al Martinez Jr. of District 6 and George Hogan Sr. of District 5 stopped by City Hall to qualify for another term Tuesday. Newcomer Calvin Hill also qualified for the District 6 seat on the GMC board. The Rev. Tony Fraley qualified for the Georgia Military College Board of Trustees District 1 seat Wednesday morning. The seat is currently held by Carolyn Thomas.
Incumbent Randall A. “Randy” New qualified for the GMC Board of Trustees District 2 seat Monday.
Milledgeville City Council incumbent Dr. Collinda Lee of District 1 also qualified for reelection.
As of press time Wednesday, City Councilman Steve Chambers of District 6 and Phillip Joiner of District 4 had not qualified. Joiner announced last month that he will not seek a second term in office.
Candidates interested in qualifying for local offices within the city of Milledgeville can do so in the finance department at City Hall with Patti Rushin, municipal elections superintendent, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day this week. The qualifying period ends at 4:30 p.m. Friday for the Nov. 5 elections.
The qualifying fee for each of the six seats on City Council is $180 and $252 for mayor. There is no fee to qualify for the GMC Board of Trustees.
