Alleged Econo Lodge burglar found

MILLEDGEVILLE — Milledgeville Police Department officers responded to a Thursday burglary at the Econo Lodge, in reference to more than $6,000 missing from a room. Detectives quickly found the alleged culprit.

Suspect Kenneth Williams, 22, was taken into custody and charged with burglary, giving false name and obstruction of an officer. Williams also had an outstanding probation warrant.

According to the police report, the room burglary victim advised he left his room in the early morning hours Thursday and placed the ‘do not disturb’ sign on the door.

Upon his return, he discovered an unknown person had entered the Econo Lodge room, taking the money out of the microwave.

Since the ‘do not disturb’ signs was left on the door, employees were prohibited from entering the room.

With the victim being confident someone entered his room, several employees from the business were brought to the police department for further investigation.

Management checked the system and found that someone entered the victim’s room using the master key. Cleaning personnel have master keys for daily chores.

After interviewing personnel from the business, Williams was identified as the alleged perpetrator of the theft. Police contend that Williams took the master key while the other employees were cleaning, entered the room and stole the money, according to the report.

Once Williams was processed at the police department, he was transported to the Baldwin County Jail. A detention officer removed the inside sole of William's shoe and found more than $1,500, which went to MPD detectives for evidence, police said.
