Lockerly spring plant sale next week

MILLEDGEVILLE — The month of April brings with it an annual spring fundraiser for the entire community to enjoy.

Lockerly Arboretum's annual spring plant sale is slated for 1 to 6 p.m. Friday, April 11, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturday, April 12.

“Our plant sale has really become a community favorite,” said Executive Director Jim Garner.

As always, Lockerly will continue its tradition of offering rare varieties of specific plants. The selection of plants to choose from includes heirloom vegetables, specialty annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees.

“We'll have a large selection of plants and shrubbery on sale that's perfect for this time of the year and into summer,” said Garner.

For those looking for select plants for landscapes or gardens, the Lockerly plant sale will have unusual varieties that are not available at traditional retailers, Garner added.

One plant in particular that would bring bright color to any yard is the Achillea 'Saucy Seduction.' It grows about 25 feet high with vibrant pink flower heads. Garner said it is a plant that will last throughout the summer because it “thrives in hot, humid conditions.”

The sale will also feature vegetables.

“We'll have a variety of vegetable plants that are sure to enhance your summer vegetable gardening experience,” Garner said.

Vegetable and herb plants will include chives, vine tomatoes, cilantro, hot peppers, dill weed, orange mint, fennel, leaf parsley, lemon balm, basil, sage and thyme.

There will be more than 2,000 plants for sale and more than half are plants that have been produced in Lockerly's greenhouses.

Garner encourages everyone to come to the event to help support the growth of the arboretum.

“The spring plant sale is one of our more popular fundraising programs,” he said. “In past years, we've brought as much as $20,000 into the arboretum through the sale alone.”

Proceeds from the plant sale will all go toward the arboretum and its educational programs.

The Arboretum is located at 1534 Irwinton Road. For more information about the spring plant sale call 478-452-2112.
