SPARTA — A local man died Saturday in an accident at his pond located in Hancock County.

He and a friend were at the farm on Brookins Road, a few miles west of Devereaux when the accident happened. After removing some debris, the drain opened up and Jones was trapped in the drainpipe.

Jones’ friend was standing on the dam of the pond in close proximity to Jones’ location when the accident happened. The friend attempted to rescue Jones for approximately two hours.

Another friend who arrived after the accident left by vehicle to attempt to flag down someone to call for help along Carr Station Road.

Help arrived just before 1 p.m. At approximately 12:50 p.m. the Sparta/Hancock County Fire Department Station 1, Station 2 and Hancock County Rescue were paged to the scene. Emergency personnel and volunteers worked for nearly an hour before they were able to extract Jones’ body from the water.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, Hancock County EMS, Hancock County Rescue, Sparta/Hancock County Volunteer Fire Department Station 1, Station 2, the Georgia State Patrol and officers from the Department of Natural Resources all responded to the call.
