Cleaning, crafts Saturday at Oconee River Greenway

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Oconee River Greenway will host a river clean up day and an arts and crafts festival from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The community is invited to share in the event and bring along canoes, kayaks or boats to join the cleanup effort.

“Everyone is invited to help keep our river looking beautiful,” said Dr. Heather Langston, executive director for Oconee River Greenway Authority.

Those attending the event will help out by digging out old tires and debris from the river and by picking up trash that has collected along the river. The cleanup is organized by the Rev. Andy Adams of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

"The idea for cleaning the river was originally started by Rev. Adams and every year he has done an amazing job organizing the event," said Langston.

After the work will come the fun. Following the cleanup, there will be arts and crafts vendors on-site with fun activities, a bounce house for kids, and music by Charlie Adams and Jim Chapman.

“We will also have grilled burgers and hot dogs prepared by Oconee River Greenway Foundation board members,” said Colin Moore, Oconee River Greenway Foundation board president.

Moore also said the arts and crafts vendors participating in the event represent a wide range of tastes and interests. The vendors will include B&B Custom Outdoors, which will have a booth set up with hunting and fishing supplies, Rhonda Johnson selling tie-dye and handmade items, and Matt McGee and Clair Guy displaying and taking orders for custom metal, glass and heirloom holiday gifts. Vicki Dent will also have a booth set up to display and sell various paintings. All proceeds from the event will go to assist in future events and development at the Greenway.

Those interested in taking part may contact the office at Covenant Presbyterian Church at 478-453-9628 to pre-register or to reserve a canoe for the cleanup. For additional information contact Colin Moore at colin@thedigitalbridges.org or Sarah Hamil at sarahhamil@tllsga.org.
