Early voting yields low numbers

MILLEDGEVILLE — Just 253 voters cast their ballot as of late Tuesday afternoon since the early voting period kicked off two weeks ago for the municipal general election.

“This is a very low turnout. I was hoping for 75 to 100 voters per day,” said Chief Deputy Registrar Liz Rodgers around noon Tuesday. “There’s not as much participation in early voting as I thought we would have.”

The early voting period runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. this week in Room 104 of the Baldwin County Courthouse.  Early voting concludes Friday.

“There are parking spaces at the courthouse which are allotted for early voting, so parking should be no problem,” said Patti Rushin, superintendent of municipal elections. “Have a voice in your government. Vote early and avoid the lines on Election Day.”

The ballot includes candidates for mayor, City Council and the Georgia Military College Board of Trustees.

City Council candidates include: District 1 - Dr. Collinda Lee (incumbent); District 2 - Jeanette Walden (incumbent); District 3 - Denese Shinholster (incumbent), challenger Phillip Smith; District 4 - Walter Reynolds; District 5 - Richard “Boo” Mullins (incumbent), challengers Pam Beer and Daniel McDonald; and District 6 - Steve Chambers (incumbent) and challenger Andrew Strickland.

Mayoral candidates include incumbent Richard Bentley and challenger John Grant Jr.

Voters will need to bring a valid form of identification, which may include a Georgia driver’s license, a valid voter identification card, a valid United States passport, a government-issued employee identification card, a United States military identification card or a valid tribal identification card. All forms of identification must include a photograph of the voter.

Polls will open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day Tuesday, Nov. 5. Each voter must vote at the polling place designated for the precinct in which the voter lives.
