MILLEDGEVILLE — Nearly 90 Georgia Power employees from Plant Branch, Wallace Dam and Sinclair-Oconee Land Management volunteered their time to help clean up areas on and around Lake Sinclair on Wednesday, as part of Southern Company's “Renew Our Rivers” initiative.

Optimist and Goat Island got particular attention in addition to general shore pickup. These spots accumulate trash after the summer run.

The cleanup falls into Georgia Power’s environmental stewardship initiatives. Plant Branch began the activities in 2004.

All participants received a free T-shirt and lunch after the volunteer dirty work.

Since the program’s first full-fledged cleanup in 2000, more than 12 million pounds of debris have been pulled from waterways in Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.
