Creative Expressions combines holiday spirit with 80s tunes

MILLEDGEVILLE — Creative Expressions Studio is putting an ‘80s spin to its annual Christmas concert this year.

“We’re rewriting ‘80s tunes with Christmas lyrics, but a couple of songs will be actual Christmas songs from the 1980s,” said Katie Whipple, creative arts coordinator and music therapist for Creative Expressions. 

Scheduled at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Goldstein Center for the Performing Arts on the Georgia Military College campus, five groups created by performers with developmental disabilities and Georgia College music therapy students will perform.

“The event is free and open to the public, but we do advertise donations,” Whipple said.

The Harmonettes Hand Bell Choir, Circular Motion, Good Vibrations, Music in Motion and the Jungle Royales will perform a total of 11 songs, including “Santa Town” as the remake of “Funkytown” by Lipps Inc, “Elves Just Want to Have Fun” as the remake of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper, “The Sled Song” as a remake of “The Safety Dance” by Men Without Hats, and “A Christmas Tale” as a remake of “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles.

Creative Expressions is an initiative of The Life Enrichment Center of Baldwin County, a nonprofit organization focused on improving the quality of life of individuals with developmental disabilities. Over the past decade, the program has promoted creativity and self-expression through music therapy, performing and visual arts. Its mission to provide artists with disabilities the chance to dream, create and share their talents with their local community and beyond.
