River of Words display up at the Mary Vinson Library

Special to The U-R

MILLEDGEVILLE — The 2012 Georgia River of Words exhibition is open and available for viewing from now until early December at the Baldwin County public library’s headquarters.

River of Words is an international environmental poetry and arts project that is coordinated by Georgia Project WET and the Georgia Center for the Book. This project was designed to nurture respect and understanding of the natural world.

After exploring their local watersheds, students K-12 are encouraged to create their own poetry or art that reflects their feelings about the environment that surrounds them. Students can submit their artwork annually to the international contest, and also on a statewide level. The annual submission deadline is Dec. 1, and winners for the 2013 contest will be announced in April. The National Grand Prize Winners, eight students annually, receive a trio to Washington D.C. where they are recognized at the Library of Congress. National winners and finalists have been selected from Georgia every year since 1997.
