BCCA, Digital Bridges partner to apply for grant

MILLEDGEVILLE — Since Baldwin County earned its Certified Work Ready Community (CWRC) designation in October 2010 due to the program’s goal of attaining Georgia Work Ready Certificates, the focus of the $10,000 grants are now geared toward supporting high school and post-secondary education.

Digital Bridges and the Baldwin County College and Career Academy (BCCA) have collaborated to come up with a plan detailing various projects that could use help via grant funds. The updated Instructions from the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development (GOWD) specified the programmatic costs to go toward activities that seek to engage high school students in grades nine to 12.

The proposed projects include reimbursement for the purchase of textbooks for dual enrollment classes, costing around $5,700, and to cover the estimated $2,500 cost for textbooks benefiting the geographical information systems, Certified Nursing Assistant and automotive classes — a program set to start in the spring. The plan also includes covering the cost of WorkKeys Assessment for approximately 42 students at $35 per student, and transporting eighth-graders to BCCA for "Smooth Move."

According to the Georgia Work Ready website, Georgia Work Ready was launched in August 2006 by former Gov. Sonny Perdue and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce to improve job training and the marketability of the state’s workforce to ensure companies can more effectively generate and match the right talent with the right jobs. All of the current CWRC’s in Georgia are working on their recertification plans in order to maintain their status since the program received changes under the direction of Gov. Nathan Deal. Counties must now demonstrate a commitment to improving high school graduation rates through measurable increase, improving high school attendance rate and drive citizens who have not received a high school diploma to earn their GED in order to earn the CWRC achievement.

Through the Georgia Workforce Investment Act, the grant award is a cost reimbursement grant for which the funding period lasts through March 2013. All current CWRC grants are set to expire by April 2013.

The GOWD is working with the Georgia Department of Education, the Technical College System of Georgia, and the University System of Georgia to collect and analyze data for the measurements to set appropriate goals for each county.
