Milledgeville HEAT starts Wednesday

MILLEDGEVILLE — Starting Wednesday, officers with the Milledgeville Police Department will begin Milledgeville HEAT, a 120-day program focused on aggressive enforcement of high speed, aggressive and distracted driving. The program is intended to reduce the number of unsafe motorists and traffic accidents.

Milledgeville HEAT will last until late August and will focus traffic operations on roadways with high numbers of citizen complaints and traffic accidents. The program will also correspond with state and national programs such as Click It or Ticket.

Each month a new location will be chosen from gathered data. The first location is North Columbia Street.

During the first 12 days of the month, the department will utilize its RADAR Speed Detection Trailer to inform motorists of their speed.

Officers will also patrol the area providing educational information on the dangers of high speed driving and the proper use of seatbelts.

For the remainder of the month, Milledgeville Police officers will be strictly enforcing traffic violations in the selected areas.

“For the first 12 days, we will more than likely give a warning. After that, we will be hitting the area hard,” Sgt. Thomas Smith, Traffic Supervisor for MPD said.

The goal of the program is to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents caused by speed and aggressive, impaired or distracted driving while keeping the citizens and visitors of the City of Milledgeville as safe as possible.
