MILLEDGEVILLE —

Local produce-growers and vendors of locally made crafts will once again bring their goods to the Milledgeville Marketplace Farmers’ Market as the fifth season kicks off next week.

“We’re definitely stepping it up this year and have different things to expect every month,” said Carlee Schulte, director of Milledgeville Mainstreet. “We have some loyal vendors and we’re excited to see everyone again and welcome some new vendors to join our market.”

Milledgeville Mainstreet, the Downtown Development Authority and the Farmers’ Market Committee are pleased to announce opening day is slated for 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 2.

“Live entertainment will be provided by Sandra & T.P. Hollomon, The Bluegrass Strangers. The group is a staple for us on opening day since they’ve opened up every year,” Schulte said. “Each month we will have at least one band to provide entertainment. On April 9, we will have the band Analog Reunion.”

New marketplace punch cards will be implemented this year for shoppers to receive a punch for every purchase. After 10 transactions, shoppers will be entered into a monthly drawing for the chance to win $25 in market bucks. Punch cards can be picked up at the marketplace tent at the farmers’ market.

“The community can expect to see much more live entertainment this year, along with other activities including a dunking booth,” Schulte said. “We’re in our fifth year and we’re excited to start back.”

The downtown farmers’ market moved to its new location on the grassy area next to the Golden Pantry during the 2012 season, and Schulte said the area has provided shoppers a more comfortable experience out of the hot summer temperatures.

“Construction will start at the pavilion in about a month, and during that time we will move back to the parking lot. We had a few unforeseeable delays, but we’re back on track,” she said. “The package is out to bid now and the 30-day mark is this week. When we get all of the packages back, we will choose one and they will have a certain amount of time to build the pavilion. Hopefully we will have the pavilion complete by the end of June.”

The market will open every Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and will continue through late October.

“Come to the market every Tuesday to find better tasting, fresh food grown locally and an array of handmade products. Buy local and support local farmers and artisans,” Schulte said. “The market is the place you want to be on Tuesdays to meet friends, buy fresh foods and local crafts. We hope to see you there.”
