Walmart, police promote safety awareness

MILLEDGEVILLE — This Father's Day weekend, Walmart partners with Milledgeville Police Department's Explorer program to promote safety awareness and raise funds for the Children's Miracle Network.

The event is slated for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

A food stand selling hamburgers, hot dogs, and Coca-Cola drink products will be located out front of the Walmart department store on 2592 N. Columbia St.

Members of the Explorer Post No. 139 will be giving out flyers on gun safety and burglary prevention, as well.

"It's an honor for Walmart to ask our Explorer Post to pass out important information on Father's Day weekend," said Police Chief Dray Swicord. "Walmart has always been a great supporter, not only to the Milledgeville Police Department but to our Explorer Program."

According to Walmart loss prevention officer, Dennis Kent, the department store was more than willing to partner with the police department.

"Working in loss prevention we work with the Milledgeville police officers all the time. I thought it would be a great way to not only give them a chance to let the community know more about the Explorer program but also a good way to team up to help people be safe during the summer while raising money for a great cause," he said.

Walmart will donate half of the proceeds from the event to the Children's Miracle Network while the other half will go to the Milledgeville Explorer Post.

"The money doesn't go to waste. We use the money for competitions the Explorers go to throughout the year," said David McNeely of the police department.

McNeely heads up the Explorer Post No. 139 program.

Explorers is a youth program that provides educational training for young adults on the purposes, mission, and objectives of law enforcement. It is for young adults, ages 14 to 20, who are interested in a career in law enforcement.

The Explorers are taught proper procedures in all aspects of law enforcement. They also attend conferences and competitions throughout the southeast region.

Kent says the store will also have a Father's Day raffle to further aid in the effort to raise funds.

"We're putting together a Father's Day gift basket to be raffled off to a customer."

Raffle tickets will be $1 and the drawing will take place at the end of the event on Saturday.
