CIS, Walmart collect school supplies for at-risk youth

MILLEDGEVILLE —

Local students will be better prepared for the upcoming academic year through the donation of school supplies due to the partnership formed between Communities In Schools of Milledgeville-Baldwin County (CISMBC) and Walmart.

Also in collaboration with Baldwin County Family Connection and 13WMAZ, the annual Back to School Supply Drive will provide basic learning materials and supplies to underprivileged students in Baldwin County.

“We are very excited about the school drive and to partner with 13WMAZ, Walmart and Baldwin Family Connection,” said Sandy Baxter, CISMBC executive director. “Working together will allow us to provide school supplies to many kids in Baldwin County.”

The community is encouraged to donate basic school essentials to benefit students and educators within the Baldwin County public school system, including the Early Learning Center, Eagle Ridge Elementary, Creekside Elementary, Midway Elementary and Baldwin High School. Supply donations include paper, glue sticks, crayons, markers, pens, pencils, calculators, rulers, scissors, folders, notebooks, binders, clear or mesh book bags, cleaning supplies, hand sanitizers, paper towels and other basic school supplies.

“This school supply drive will help children who are in need and who can’t afford supplies and will also better supply our classrooms; the need is huge,” said Jessica Choice, CISMBC site service director. “Don’t worry about the quantity; every little bit helps.”

Supplies will be collected through Sunday, Aug. 18 in the collection bin located inside the Milledgeville Walmart Supercenter Store’s front entrance. During last year’s supply drive, more than 260 items, valued around $430, were collected for local classrooms and students.

The supply drive also features an opportunity to win backpacks filled with school supplies courtesy of Walmart. Winners will be selected at random from Twitter users using the #CISGABackpack hashtag. To be eligible for the drawing, Twitter users must use the hashtag in reference to the back to school drive.
