Special to The U-R
MILLEDGEVILLE — Four student actors from the Georgia College Department of Theatre are tackling the tangled world of love, laughter and lifelong relationships — just in time to capture the spirit of Valentine’s Day.
The cast is performing one of the funniest musical comedies ever to play off-Broadway — “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” — for students, Homecoming alumni, parents, belated Valentine’s Day couples and arts lovers from nearby communities.
The play — directed by Amy Pinney with musical direction by Wendy Mullen — will run through Feb. 24 in the 1,000-seat Russell Hall auditorium on GC’s historic main campus in downtown Milledgeville. Performances through Saturday are at 8 p.m. and the Sunday matinee starts at 2 p.m.
The play also hits the highway as the department’s first traveling troupe — taking the play up U.S. 441 to Eatonton’s 500-seat Plaza Arts Center Theater at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 1. The production is being staged in cooperation with the Eatonton-Putnam County Arts Foundation.
“This is the first time one of our main-stage productions has traveled in Georgia,” says Artistic Director and Chair of Theatre Karen Berman. “We hope this establishes a long-term partnership between the GC Department of Theatre and the Eatonton Plaza Arts Center.”
“We’re reaching out to arts lovers throughout Middle Georgia to come see Atlanta-quality theater without spending half the night driving on I-20,” says Pinney. “They can come to Milledgeville and see it on campus or visit the great facility in Eatonton.”
Pinney and Mullen have been rehearsing the cast six days a week for eight weeks.
“This play is the perfect date night or girls’ night out,” Pinney says. “It’s just laugh-out-loud funny and full of connections, relationships and heartwarming moments.”
The cast members are: senior Erin Borain and sophomores Zack Bradford, Hayley Koger and Mitchell Moore. Borain and Bradford recently attended a Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival workshop in Albany, Ga. GC’s production of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” will be entered in the festival’s national competition.
“This is a rock-star cast with powerful voices that blend perfectly,” Pinney said. “Every moment in rehearsal is a joy. They work incredibly well together.”
The musical has 23 songs and lasts just under two hours.
Many restaurants and stores in Milledgeville are making special offers to patrons who present a coupon or ticket from the play. Among them are: Jack & Darcy, The Lemon Tree, Metropolis Café and Villanes’s Jewelry and Unique Accessories.
“For patrons planning to see the show in Milledgeville, Friday night will be an ideal time because many students will be at the college’s Homecoming concert,” Pinney said.
General admission tickets are: $16 for senior citizens, non-Georgia College students and Georgia College faculty and staff $12; Georgia College students are $7. Groups of 10 or more: $10. Tickets in Eatonton are $16.
