GC Wellness Center recognized with awards

MILLEDGEVILLE — Georgia College’s Wellness and Recreation Center recently brought home several awards ranking it as one of the top facilities in the nation.

The wellness center received the Outstanding Sports Facility Award from the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA), which recognizes excellence in newly constructed, expanded and renovated recreational facilities at NIRSA member institutions across the nation.

The building also won first place honors with the Associated General Contractors of Georgia (AGC) Build Georgia Award, for the Garbutt/Christman Joint Venture Partnership.

“We celebrate this outstanding facility and the recognition it has received,” said Georgia College President Steve Dorman. “The Wellness Center is a facility our campus and community can be proud of thanks to the collaborative efforts of all those who worked to make it a reality.”

The center was also recognized for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification. The first Georgia College building to attain this ranking, LEED Certification is a rating system used by the U.S. Green Building Council to certify projects. The Wellness Center features water conservation, such as collecting rainwater to nurture native landscaping plants and special pool filters that require 90 percent less water.

In addition, the Wellness Center was featured on the January cover of the Journal of American College Health-a journal that covers developments and research in clinical and preventive medicine, health promotion, environmental health and safety, nursing assessment, interventions, management, pharmacy and sports medicine.

Also honored were representatives from the partners who helped create and build the wellness center. They included Jeff Arlington with Garbutt/Chrisman Construction, Tony Menefee with Menefee Architecture and Emily Gossett with BDR Partners.

“This building and all it embodies shows the success that can come with hard work and great partnerships,” said Arlington.

Georgia College’s Student Government Association (SGA) played a vital in the development of the 101,000 square foot facility, which opened in 2011. SGA representatives were involved in the planning of the project for several years and helped insure its funding with students fees.
