Explorers use teamwork at Winterfest

MILLEDGEVILLE —

The Milledgeville Police Department’s Explorer Program Post 139 attended Winterfest, a national competition in Gatlinburg, Tenn, Feb. 8 through 10.

MPD’s 11-member Explorer group competed well in the Tactical Fitness Challenge, Crime Scene Investigation, Officer’s Survival, Unknown Problem, Accident Investigation and Active Shooter Situation contests.

A third place finish for excellence during Accident Investigation was the best result. The four Milledgeville competitors analyzed a hit and run scenario case with a fatality.

Post 139 faced a total of 71 other law enforcement agencies representing 12 states last weekend.

The local youth Explorer Program scored above average in most categories, especially teamwork.

Sgt. Daniel Parker of MPD said the group started training last October for 17 events. The local youth Explorers requested certain events but were randomly placed late the Friday before an early morning competitive kick-off.

The MPD instructors including David McNeely and Lt. Wanda Holsey were proud of their group.

The program received a major boost Thursday via a $1,600 donation from Washington EMC’s Operation Round Up.

Operation Round Up is a community development program funded by the voluntary contributions of Washington EMC customers to the Washington Electric Foundation. Contributions are made to the foundation when participants elect to have their monthly electric bill rounded up to the next dollar.

The small donations add up over time allowing the foundation to support community programs like the Explorer Post.

Parker made a funding request for uniform and equipment purchases.

Parker said beyond the annual golf event fundraiser the Explorer Post has no guaranteed money. These donations make a gigantic difference.

The Explorer Program is a Learning for Life offshoot of the Boys Scouts, the country’s largest youth serving organization. Two Explorer Programs exist within the district including the law enforcement post in Baldwin and a fire explorer post in Jasper.

Currently, the Baldwin program boasts 11 active members ranging from 14 to 20 years old. MPD also sponsors a junior program for ages 12 to 14 years old.

The Explorer Program prepares participants for a law enforcement career. With a full rank structure just like the MPD big boys, the young ones get a leg up on the police interworking.
