Arrest made in credit card fraud

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Baldwin County Sheriff’s office made a Wednesday arrest stemming from a local credit card fraud report.

A county resident credit card had been used in several locations, though the victim wasn’t missing any cards.

The majority of the transactions occurred Sunday, Feb. 10. Authorities received the call Wednesday.

The suspects racked up 60 transactions, totaling around $3,000. Purchases were made in Macon, Warner Robins, Atlanta and Philadelphia.

Fraudulent charges included motel rooms, cell phones, airline tickets, food, gas and clothes.

BCSO Lt. Bobby Langford, with help from the Secret Service, arrested Dorties Brown Wednesday morning in Warner Robins.

The sheriff’s office isn’t sure yet how Brown came across the credit card.

Capt. Brad King said there are four other offenders in this case. Officials are close to identifying the additional suspects.

“We think they are hooked up with somebody that is actually manufacturing fraudulent cards,” King said.

Authorities believe Brown had more than one card.

Brown is currently charged with one count of identity fraud.

The BCSO believes the other four credit card culprits are from the Warner Robins area as well.

King credits the ability to partner with the Secret Service through the Organized Fraud Task Force for helping solve cases that would otherwise be impossible to complete.

“We are very proud of our relationship with them, and the cases we’ve worked,” King said. “The common thread in all of it is we have a Baldwin County victim no matter where the purchases take place.”

Most credit card companies offer a warning system that kicks in when a nontypical purchase is made. The BCSO suggests people check with their provider if they aren’t already signed up for this fraud deterrent service.
