Deputies greet Ga. students after Newtown shooting

GAINSVILLE —

Sheriff's deputies and police officers greeted students in some Georgia school systems as students returned to school in the wake of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., last month that left 20 children dead.

In Hall County, the system's superintendent worked with the county sheriff to assign 33 deputies to the district's 33 schools for the first day back.

In Gwinnett County -- the state's largest school system -- police said officers were being assigned to schools to help prevent any type of copy-cat crime after the Connecticut shooting.

Hall County Superintendent William Schofield tells WSB-TV that school officials knew Wednesday, the day students there returned after the holiday break, would be a nervous day for parents when they brought their children to school.
