Local support available for victims of domestic violence

MILLEDGEVILLE —

Domestic violence and abuse can happen to anyone, yet experts say the problem is often overlooked, excused or denied. As a result, the abuse escalates and lives are often lost.

Christmas Eve’s tragic shooting in Baldwin County is a call for notice of the local resources that are available, officials say.

Wilson has seen more than a thousand cases a year of domestic violence in Baldwin County. She encourages anyone who falls prey to domestic violence to call law enforcement immediately.

Noticing and acknowledging the signs of an abusive relationship is one of the first steps to ending it, according to Wilson. Unfortunately, the most telling signs are often the ones that get ignored. These warning signs include name calling, isolation from friends and family, irrational jealousy, attempts of control and threats of violence. Many times, victims brush these warnings off as symptoms of a bad day.

Confidential counseling is available on the third floor of the Solicitor's General's office. Victim Advocates, such as Wilson, are there to listen, not judge.

Both Wilson and Blackwell said they want victims to never take any threat of violence lightly.

Blackwell’s office can be reached at (478) 445-4445.
