Mama dog cares for blended family

MILLEDGEVILLE — A female cockapoo named CC might be the most skilled mother heading into a celebratory weekend for all moms.

Animal Rescue Foundation Inc. (ARF) has quite a story to tell.

ARF President Robyn Register said CC came to the shelter when her five puppies were two days old.

“The owner just couldn't care for them,” Register said.

After a week of normal mama to puppy care, Greg Hill from Baldwin County Animal Control called ARF with a dilemma.

Two orphaned red tabby kittens, about two weeks old at the time, wouldn't take any food.

“He said I can't bottle feed them and asked what we could do,” Register said. “I said leave them with me. I want to try something.”

CC was introduced to the kittens. Within 15 minutes, they were part of the litter.

The chance paid off for this unique “blended family.”

The cockapoo nurses and cleans the kittens just like her puppies.

Register hasn't seen a canine mother mix animals into a litter in this fashion.

“This is the first time we've experienced it,” she said. “She doesn't know the difference. They are hers just like the puppies are. The kittens are giving her a run for her money. She chases them all around. It's cute to watch.”

The puppies and kittens will be available for adoption once they are old enough to spay or neuter.

CC will be spayed once the puppies and kittens are weaned.

“We will be looking for a very special home for her where she will be spoiled and rewarded forever for helping these sweet kittens,” ARF said.

Adoptions are slow at the shelter that's at capacity.

“This is always a slow time of year for adoptions. We are packed,” the ARF president said. “We sure need some folks to come out to volunteer and adopt and donate.”

To make a donation to help with the care of this precious family checks may be mailed to ARF; P.O. Box 1032; Milledgeville, Ga. 31059 or through PayPal payments on the foundation's website.

The skilled mama dog should teach everyone a caring lesson into a loving Mother's Day weekend.
