Man turns himself in for arson

MILLEDGEVILLE — A local man was arrested and charged with arson this week after a structure was set ablaze on Stembridge Road.

A deputy from the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office responded to an assistance call in reference to a Stembridge Road structure fire Tuesday night.

According to an incident report, at approximately 7:11 p.m. deputy Ashley Brown was dispatched to a residence in the 180 block of Stembridge Road. Baldwin County Fire Department firefighters were handling a structure fire in an abandoned home.

Baldwin County Fire Chief Troy Reynolds said the call came in around 7 p.m.

Firefighters arrived to a 50 percent involved blaze. The responders got the fire under control in 15 or so minutes, preventing any spreading into the tree line.

A man, later identified as Brandon Hobbs, 21, approached Deputy Brown. He informed Brown that he set the fire and turned himself in to the deputy. Hobbs was taken into custody and charged with arson in the first degree. He was transported and turned over to jail personnel for processing.

If convicted, the 21-year-old could face a one-year sentence or a maximum penalty of 20 years.

Reynolds said this arson scenario isn’t common.

“Very seldom does someone show back up and say they did it,” the county fire chief said. “I’m glad he did.”
