First Friday block party hits downtown

MILLEDGEVILLE — The April installment of Milledgeville’s First Friday offers a variety of activities to kick spring into high gear, beginning at 5 p.m. Friday.

Music, giveaways arts and crafts highlight the list of activities celebrating the First Friday block party theme.

The Oconee Regional Medical center Kids Corner will feature Easter-themed arts and crafts and lemonade.

The Lemon Tree will also hold its grand re-opening, celebrating its relocation to Hancock Street. A ribbon cutting is slated for 4 p.m. There will also be door prizes and vendors on-site.

Several of the businesses on North Wayne Street have teamed up to hold a First Friday block party. ‘Get Down on Wayne’ will offer First Friday goers a little something extra this month! The Market Collective will have sweets and treats, Need-A-Nerd will host face painter Lisa Marie with The Crazy Dog Studio, Doughboy’s Pizza will be giving away their famous dough knots and live music from the ‘Bun Relocation Project’ and Metropolis Café will have wine and beer specials and will be giving away hummus and baba ganoush samples.

The Georgia College Greek Life Greek Week Awards will be presented in the parking lot next to the post office on Hancock Street. The awards program will take place at 8 p.m. Prior to the awards, ‘60-style blues rock band The Georgia Flood will perform in the parking lot from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

The First Friday committee will sell First Friday T-shirts as well as tickets for the new 50/50 raffle that will be held each First Friday. Attendees can purchase tickets for just $1 and at the end of the evening a name will be drawn. Fifty percent of the income from the raffle will be used for future First Friday events and the other 50 percent will be given to the lucky winner.

Featured non-profits for the month are Relay for Life of Baldwin County and GC Spectrum. Relay Row will feature local relay teams raffling off items to help raise funs in support of Relay for Life. Last year, the local Relay raised more than $135,000. GC Spectrum, a student-run PR firm, is organizing Walk MS, a 5K fundraising walk benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Georgia Chapter.

Another feature at today’s event will be Baldwin High fine arts students who will be decked out in ‘50s attire as they prepare for their performance of “Grease” at 7 p.m. May 1-3. Tickets for the BHS performance are $7. For more information email Anna Brock at

Later in the evening the ever-growing Sounds of the South event will be taking place. The two-night student-led music festival features a variety of music and a portion of proceeds will go to the revitalization efforts of the Central State Hospital Local Redevelopment Authority. Wristbands to get into the participating venues are $5 for one night or $8 for both Friday and Saturday and will be available for purchase downtown on Friday and Saturday nights.
