Hit and run suspect arrested

MILLEDGEVILLE — A man is recovering from a weekend hit and run accident that resulted in the DUI arrest of an underage drinker.

Deputy Andrew Brantley of the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office was dispatched Saturday to South Creek Mud Boggin on Irwinton Road in reference to a hit and run involving a pedestrian. According to the sheriff’s office incident report, the proprietor of the location informed Brantley that a red Chevrolet pickup truck struck a member of his event staff and fled the property. The vehicle sped away northbound on Irwinton Road, according to the sheriff’s report.

Additional deputies from the sheriff's office arrived on scene and began to search the area for the pickup truck. Brantley spoke with the victim, who was lying on his back, conscious and alert. Brantley did not notice any visible injuries to the victim, but he did complain of extreme pain to the entire right side of his body. Brantley also questioned numerous witnesses who informed him that a red Chevrolet pickup truck was “cutting doughnuts” in the field. The victim motioned to the driver for him to get out of the vehicle for safety reasons, but the driver refused. The victim then reached into the vehicle to try and get the keys, but the driver quickly accelerated and sped away, causing the victim to be dragged by the truck.

According to witnesses, the man was dragged approximately 30 to 40 feet until he fell to the ground completely. After questioning the witnesses and the victim, EMS arrived on scene and the man was taken to Oconee Regional Medical Center.

A member of the event staff then notified Brantley that the driver of the pickup truck had returned and was requesting to speak with him about the incident. The driver was identified as 18-year-old Kurt Childree.
