Milledgeville’s own fights for her dream on American Idol

MILLEDGEVILLE — Milledgeville native Nica Nashae won over American Idol’s celebrity judges two weeks ago and she is now ready to do it again during Hollywood Week.

As one of hundreds of hopefuls, Nashae’s group performance will premier at 8 p.m. Thursday on FOX. Judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. will either allow her to continue her Idol journey or send her home.

Nashae’s passion for singing began at the age of 5. She grew up performing at churches, schools and various community events. Nashae graduated from Baldwin High School in 2007. As she currently pursues a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy at Kennesaw State University, she finds time to record in the studio and participate in community and campus events.

The 24-year-old was determined to follow her dream of becoming a famous R&B performer, so she tried out for the American Idol Season 13 Atlanta auditions last June. After passing several audition rounds with show producers, she finally got the call to sing for the celebrity judges. They gave her three yeses.

American Idol, hosted by Ryan Seacrest, is an American reality-singing competition series that began airing on FOX in 2002. The concept of the show is to find a new solo recording artist where the winner is determined by the viewers. The winning contestant receives a record deal with a major label. Former American Idol winners include Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Scotty McCreery, Phillip Phillips and Candice Glover.
