Local student wins district speech contest

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Sixth District Department of Georgia American Legion held its 41st annual high school oratorical contest in Milledgeville, Saturday, March 2. Contestants were allowed to speak on their prepared oration for eight to 10 minutes on the United States Constitution. In addition, they were given three to five minutes to speak on one of four assigned topics. 

Seth Lowery, son of Shannon and Chris Lowery of Milledgeville, won first place. Lowery is a senior at GMC Prep School and was sponsored by Morris-Little Post 6 American Legion in Milledgeville. He was presented the gold oratorical medal and a check for $225.

As the Sixth District first place winner, Lowery will advance to the Area I Competition, which will be held at Laurens County Post 17, Dublin, on March 9. He will compete with first place winners from the First District and Eighth District of Georgia. 

The winning speaker of the Area I contest will advance to the Department of Georgia competition on March 16, in Perry in competition with the other three areas of Georgia. The Department of Georgia winner competes in the National competition in Indianapolis, Ind. in April.
