GMC Prep presents spring musical

MILLEDGEVILLE — Georgia Military College Prep School’s spring musical “Dream” brings a combination of well-known Broadway musicals to one uniquely created show.

“Dream” is an original show written by GMC senior Sarah McTyre that features music from 16 different Broadway shows. The show centers on a little girl named Sarah who has a dream of making it to Broadway. In her dream, several Broadway renditions appear, spanning decades of Broadway musical talent.

“It’s fun seeing the different performances blend in to each other,” said Fine Arts Director Mark Weaver. “The songs range from older classics from Rodgers and Hammerstein to modern themes like ‘Shrek.’”

The performances are arranged so that the end of each rendition will connect to the next.

“At one moment you can have orphans from ‘Annie’ singing ‘It’s a Hard Knock Life’ then they could be run off the stage by ‘Anne Oakley’ and her gun. You never know what character will show up, so it definitely keeps the audience guessing,” he said.

The show is a very large production, featuring 67 students from both GMC Prep middle school and high school.

“We started rehearsals in March and have aggressively been working hard on it since,” Weaver said.

The show is a new concept for both Weaver and the students.

“We do full length shows every year, but this is the first time we’ve attempted a musical of this magnitude before,” he said.

The process of rehearsal was also done differently for the show. Weaver said because the production is a combination of several Broadway shows in one, rehearsal has been done in isolation. There has been a schedule of rehearsal days for each individual act in the musical. Wednesday night dress rehearsal was the first time the students saw the finished work put together.

“It’s been fabulous watching it come together piece by piece, and now that you see the big picture it’s an amazing sight to witness,” Weaver said.

Another characteristic that sets this musical apart from others is its level of audience participation.  Besides its number of audience participation scenes within the musical, there will also be a sing-a-long during intermission featuring a selection from the movie “Frozen.”

“Dream” will also feature a brand new type of technology that Weaver has named “DreamBands.”

The DreamBands are custom designed LED wristbands that change color and light up in certain ways depending on what is happening on stage.

“I’m really excited about the audience participation,” Weaver said. “This technology will not only bring something different to the performance, but it will also bring the audience together with lighting design.”

The spring musical will be at the Goldstein Center for Performing Arts and is slated for 7:30 p.m. tonight and 7 p.m. Saturday. Tonight’s show will include pre-show mini performances for those who are interested in coming early.

“The Goldstein Center seats about 500 people so you’d want to come early to get a seat,” Weaver said.

The ticket price is $5 and can be purchased at the door.
