Baldwin County Sheriff's Deputy Will Robinson is honored each year during a 1-mile fun run and 5K road race. Robinson was killed in the line of duty Dec. 17, 1995.

The Will Robinson Memorial Run Saturday, Nov. 17. marks the 17th year of the event. Co-coordinator Suzanne Ratliff said more than 400 participants came out last year.

Robinson, a 1987 graduate of Georgia Military College Prep School, was a neighborhood friend of Ratliff’s. Along with the sheriff's office, GMC's Alumni Association sponsors the memorial run.

Proceeds go to the Baldwin County CHAMPS program, the 1879 Circle of Friends Scholarship Fund and the GMC Will Robinson Scholarship Fund.

Ratliff said the event is important to the Robinson family, whose members attend every year.

“I think it is important for our community to remember him. I think they should remember those that have died trying to protect us,” Ratliff said.

The Junior Women's Club used to handle the run. When the group disbanded, Ratliff convinced the GMC Alumni to take it over.

GMC folks come out in full force each year. All schools are encouraged to participate.

The fun run starts at 8:30 a.m. with the 5K following at 9 a.m.

All fun run participants receive ribbons and first place awards go to the top male and female.

The 5K road race is broken down into age groups, starting at 10 and under. Trophies will be presented to the overall male and female winners, the top high school runner and overall top public safety officer, which includes law enforcement officers, military, emergency services personnel, firefighters and emergency dispatchers. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented to the top three male and female runners of each age category.

The top overall male and female finisher from Baldwin County receives a prize as well. The school with the most participants wins the school spirit award.

The starting line for both races is the North Baldwin Fire Department off Airport Road, and the 5K will follow Lakeport Road, turn right onto East Lakeview, right again onto Newport Road and finish at the starting line.

Pre-registration is $15. Race day registration is $10. Shirts are sold separately for $10 while supplies last.

Macon Tracks members receive a $1 discount when pre-registering.
