Georgia College continues giving tradition

MILLEDGEVILLE — Georgia College received statewide recognition for participation in the annual State Charitable Contribution Program (SCCP).

Faculty and staff members contributed more than $21,000 last year, which benefited a number of nonprofit organizations.

“Generosity is one of the core values of Georgia College. Our employees have embraced that by giving willingly to help those who are less fortunate,” said President Dr. Steve Dorman.

The university received the Commissioner’s Award for the second highest dollar amount contributed to the campaign. That ranking came in the category of state agencies having 1,001 to 9,000 employees.

“Georgia College did great last year,” said Dr. Craig Smith, campaign chair. “This award shows our employees are willing to go the extra mile to help.”

The awards were given out last month at the Capitol complex in Atlanta.

“My heartfelt thanks goes out to everyone who contributed to this campaign,” said Smith. “It represents not only the willingness of Georgia College employees to help others in need across our state, but also the level of commitment that exists here to go above and beyond the norm in so many ways.”

SCCP provides a way for state of Georgia and University System of Georgia (USG) employees to contribute to the charity of their choice through payroll deductions or a one-time donation. Across the state, approximately 130,000 employees participate and more than 250 charities have been certified by the program.

The USG raised more than $969,000 during the 2012-2013 campaign. All other state agencies combined raised $473,000.

Overall, the campaign raised nearly $1.5 million dollars.
