Volunteers provide manuel labor on Labor Day weekend

MILLEDGEVILLE — The work on the walking trail at the Milledgeville Community Garden has been delayed due to the extended rain, however, the majority of the grading has already been completed by the county under the supervision of County Engineer Brian Wood. All of the county crews that have helped advance this project have done an excellent job.

Appropriately, volunteers will be performing manual labor on Labor Day weekend. This Saturday, Aug. 31, from 7:30 a.m. to noon Charles Foster, a renowned expert in concrete paving, is volunteering his time to lead and instruct a volunteer crew to begin the sidewalk and quarter walking trail around the community garden. The trail will be quarter-mile long and connected to a sidewalk leading into the garden to make it completely wheel-chair accessible. Anyone looking to share or learn these skills is encouraged to join the effort which will continue for several weeks. Please call Garden Manager Joe Ward if interested in helping at 478-453-2565.

Saturday, Sept. 14 will be Planting Day. Despite the unusual summer weather, most of the MCGA gardeners have been successful to some degree with their inaugural gardens. Anyone interested in instructing and assisting novice gardeners with their fall planting is strongly encouraged to share valuable “know-how”. The gardeners love learning from other gardeners. Please call Joe Ward or Debbie Harshbarger at 478-414-6433 if you wish to share your knowledge and experience.

Following the success of the summer camp, staffed with volunteers and summer interns from Live Healthy Baldwin, an after-school tutoring camp is now serving about 21 children ages pre-K through 13 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the Collins P. Lee Center. This is a great opportunity for anyone to volunteer and make a difference in the lives of these children. Assistance with homework and various hands-on enrichment activities would be extremely helpful and fun. You don't have to be an educator to share your passions and interests with these appreciative kids. In addition, some school supplies and nutritious snacks are needed.

Please contact Cyndee Edwards, program director for the Baldwin County Parks & Recreation Department, if you wish to assist in any way, at 478-456-2478. Everyone is encouraged to stop by the Collins P. Lee Center at 237 Harrisburg Road.
