Georgia College's 'Proposals' brings Broadway to Black Box

MILLEDGEVILLE —

Georgia College student actors will present a story of tangled loves and lives during the romantic comedy-drama “Proposals” in the Campus Black Box Theatre.

The Department of Theatre will bring playwright Neil Simon’s Broadway production to life at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, through Saturday, Nov. 10; 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14 through Saturday, Nov. 17; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11 and Sunday, Nov. 18.

Directed by Iona Holder, Georgia College theatre faculty member, the play explores relationships of love, loss, joy and sorrow during a 1953 summer retreat.

“The intimacy of this production is unique,” said Holder. “This play is a full four-dimensional experience topped off with a bit of magical realism.”

The performance features nine student actors: Natalie Sharp, senior English major; Drew Godsey, senior theatre and mass communications major; Leah Keelan, senior theatre major; John Underwood, senior theatre major; Trey Barnett, junior theatre and mass communications major; Anna Fontaine, junior theatre major; Sasha Schafler, junior theatre major; Zack Pierce, senior mass communications major; Joseph Dumford, senior theatre major.

Performed as a theatre-in-the-round, “Proposals” will place the audience in the action.

“At some points in the play, the audience will be less than a foot away, allowing them to see all the small mannerisms of our characters,” said Dumford, who plays loud-mouthed Mafia descendent Vinnie Bavasi.

The cast is a talented group of actors, said Holder.

“They are sure to make audiences laugh and maybe cry,” she said. “Certainly, ‘Proposals’ will become an enjoyable night of charming American theatre.”

General admission: $14; senior citizens, non-Georgia College students and Georgia College faculty and staff: $10; Georgia College students: $5. Groups of 10 or more: $9.
