MILLEDGEVILLE — Property or business owners within the City of Milledgeville should already have received their tax bill for 2013. Since property taxes were released Oct. 17, more than 200 bills have already returned to the finance department at City Hall due to incorrect mailing addresses.
“If you have not received a tax bill or all of your bills if you own multiple properties by now, please contact my office so that we can assist you in obtaining your bill or bills,” said Patti Rushin, manager of the city’s finance department. “Already this year, we have had over 200 bills returned to this office which we have researched and placed back in the mail to a better address.”
Rushin said the reason some property owners may have not received their bill thus far is because the owner may have bought or sold property within the past year. Property tax bills are also mailed to the owner of record on Jan. 1 of the taxable year, which may be another reason some property owners have not received their bill.
“When property is bought or sold, closing is a very busy time. Usually, property is prorated with money taken from the seller and given to the purchaser with instructions to pay the taxes. If you bought or sold property and cannot recall whether you have paid those taxes, please call us,” Rushin said. “Also, please remember that taxes follow the property. This is the reason for title searches each time property changes hands, to ensure that the new buyer has no prior taxes for which he or she will be responsible.”
The deadline to pay the 2013 city property tax is Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 4:30 p.m. A one time penalty of 10 percent and interest charge of 1 percent per month will be affixed to all city taxes which are not received in the office by the deadline. Postmarks of Dec. 18 will be accepted.
Property taxes can be paid in person at the finance office in City Hall, located on Hancock Street, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The drive-thru window is also available for individuals able to present their bill, or bills can be dropped in the drop box located beside the drive-thru window. Another option is to mail payments to P.O. Box 1900, Milledgeville, Ga. 31059.
“We will be glad to provide you with a receipt of your payment if you will kindly enclose a stamped, addressed envelope with your payment,” Rushin said. “If you have an escrow account, please send your bill to your mortgage company as soon as possible to ensure prompt payment.”
To pay property taxes online, visit www.milledgevillaga.us and click on the “pay online” tab to search for properties by last name of the property owner or by parcel number. Those paying online can also print their own receipts through the website link.
“Don’t just assume that your taxes were paid; locate your map and parcel number, go to the website and check it,” Rushin said.
