Parents charged in infant death

The parents of a 2-month-old who died in September at a local apartment complex have been charged in the infant’s death.

Tamarus Dante Hartry and girlfriend Jessica Driskell, the infant’s parents, face felony murder and cruelty to children in the first degree charges.

Hatry and Driskell were arrested Friday in connection to the death.

“We were able to come to the conclusion that the parents were actually the cause of the child’s death,” Maj. Reginald Hill, chief investigator with the Milledgeville Police Department said.

Police responded Sept. 6 to 130 N. Lincoln St., Apt. 3E, Riverbend Apartments, in reference to a 2-month-old child deceased at the scene.

“Due to some suspicious things we noticed at the scene, an autopsy was ordered. The medical examiner with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab found the cause of death to be force trauma to the head. She ruled it a homicide,” Hill said.

Though both parents were charged, Hill said the investigation is ongoing.

“We don’t look for this to be an open and shut case,” MPD’s chief investigator said. “It’s been a challenging case to be honest with you, but we feel the right charges have been taken.”

Det. Scott Goodwin handled the difficult circumstances.

“That’s a serious offense and something traumatic to deal with. Working that case has been challenging for (Goodwin) as well as other investigators that assisted,” Hill said. “It’s horrifying to see an infant child laying there lifeless. When you see anyone like that, it’s difficult to deal with, but when you a small baby it makes it 10 times greater.”

Several agencies assisted in the investigation including the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS), the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office and the GBI.

“Everybody had to be in on this,” Hill said. “It was a joint thing with multiple different interviews coming from different angles.”

Hartry and Driskell are being held in the Baldwin County jail without bond.
