Arrest made in armed robbery case

MILLEDGEVILLE — One suspect is in custody and the search continues for a second in connection to the Aug. 16 armed robbery of the 7 Four 7 convenience store.

Ernest Greene Jr. was arrested and taken into custody Tuesday. He is charged with armed robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, use of a firearm during a crime and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Officers responded last week to the 7 Four 7 convenience store on W. Andrews Street, in reference to an armed robbery around 5:27 a.m., according to Milledgeville Police.

While the robbery was in progress, a couple of patrons were inside the video gambling room of the business unaware of the incident.

Although it was initially believed there was one suspect involved in the incident, police reviewed video surveillance footage from the store and determined that one suspect wore a helmet and a second suspect wore a mask during the commission of the crime. They entered the building with one of the suspects carrying a rifle. Both exited the business with an undetermined amount of cash prior to police arrival.

Det. Everett January and other members of the MPD detective’s division searched the area surrounding the business and were able to confiscate key piece of evidence, according to Maj. Reggie Hill with MPD.

“Fortunately for us, a couple of pieces of the evidence, along with witness information led to the identity of one of the suspects,” said Hill in a police statement.

A search warrant was issued for Greene’s arrest on Tuesday. He was taken into custody without incident. During a search of his residence, police found a 12-gauge sawed off shotgun, resulting in an additional charge.

The second suspect seen on the video footage remains at-large.

Anyone with any information that would lead to the apprehension of the suspect is asked to call Det. Everett January at 478-414-4065 or MPD’s Tip Line at 478-414-4413, to remain anonymous.
