MILLEDGEVILLE —

U.S. Congressman Dr. Paul Broun of the 10th District welcomed residents and students to the new Milledgeville district office located on the fourth floor of the Powell Building at the Central State Hospital campus Thursday.

The office will be open three days a week.

"Baldwin County has a tremendous asset here at Central State Hospital. We need to continue to make sure this facility continues to be utilized to grow and bring economic development here to Baldwin County," Broun said. "I’ll do everything I can to make that happen. I’m honored to have our official congressional office here."

As the CSH redevelopment authority advances its campus goals, Broun would like to see Central State "re-establish" properties as a safe haven for those with mental needs.

"We have people living under bridges or in alleyways that need a safe harbor," he said. "The federal judicial system has done them a tremendous disservice when they closed the hospital."

The Congressman said fostering economic development at CSH was key for Baldwin County and the entire region.

"This is the beginning of a bonfire of economic development for Central Georgia," Broun said.

Broun is leaving his U.S. House seat he plans to run for U.S. Senate this year.
