Authorites ID man fatally struck by car near West Campus Drive

MILLEDGEVILLE — Local authorities say a pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle during the early morning hours. Georgia State Patrol Trooper First Class Michael Screws said all reports place Victor Chatfield, the victim, believed to be in his early 20s, walking in the roadway around 5:20 a.m. The Milledgeville Police Department got a call prior to the fatal incident.

Maj. John Davis of MPD said police received the first call about a pedestrian and a follow-up call minutes after saying a man was asleep in the road.

According to GSP, a female witness from a nearby convenience store said she saw Chatfield walking around ABC Drive as she was on her way to work minutes before the accident. Officers didn’t smell alcohol on the victim, but are awaiting blood test results for confirmation on whether alcohol was involved. GSP reported no signs of impairment with the driver that hit Chatfield. Screws expects no charges.

“[The driver] didn't even have time to hit the brakes,” the trooper said. “The guy either stumbled out in front of him or was in the road.”

Authorities shut down southbound traffic on the Highway 441 bypass near West Campus for more than two hours after the incident to allow an accident reconstruction team to work the scene.
