MILLEDGEVILLE — The Milledgeville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta will hold its Annual Red and White Scholarship Dance Saturday.
Donations are $25 a person and $45 a couple. The event begins at 9 p.m.
“Our dance allows the public to contribute and participate in a night full of fun and fellowship with the purpose of the dance being to generate funds to help the Milledgeville Alumnae Chapter provide a scholarships for our service areas,” Damita Jones, public relations and financial Secretary of the Milledgeville chapter. “This year, the Red and White Dance will be held at the breathtaking LaFete.”
A DJ will be present and light hors d’oeuvres will be served.
Each year, Milledgeville Alumnae awards scholarships to local students three county service areas. The semi-formal dance helps raise funds for the scholarships, Jones said. Milledgeville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta has given out a 33 scholarships including the three recipients in 2013. The recipients of the scholarship this year are, Jayla Waller, Jakira Trawick, Brittney Curry and Marana Gainer.
All seniors at Baldwin High School, Putnam County High School and Hancock High School who have been accepted to a college or university were able to complete and submit an application for consideration for a scholarship.
One student will be awarded a scholarship from each school.
The chapter will also host its annual Mayweek starting Sunday in Milledgeville. A national initiative of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. where one week in May is designated to emphasize the importance of higher education and highlight academic and professional achievement with particular focus on achievements of African-American women. Some activities during week are open to the public.
Highlights of the week include worship service at Flagg Chapel Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Sunday. The church is located at 400 W. Franklin St. The Delta Fitness Challenge Monday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. will be held in the Flagg Chapel Gym next to the church annex. A cash mob event on Wednesday aims to encourage support of local businesses. Family and friends are urged to share business receipts with a member of the Milledgeville Alumnae Chapter so members can measure the financial impact of the event. The community is urged to patronize Real Deal Grille & More, 185 W. Andrews St., AJ’s Hot Wings & More, 2601 N. Columbia St., Palm Tree Restaurant, 11319 Georgia Highway 22, Sparta, James Fish & Chicken, 905 S. Wayne St., Mary’s Kuntry Kitchen, 250 Spring St., Sparta, and Sheila’s Big Chick, 104 Oconee St., Eatonton.
“We really want a high participation rate this year, so that the public know that we are here to help,” said Jones.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is a private non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities. The sorority was founded in 1913 on the campus of Howard University.
The Milledgeville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta was chartered in Milledgeville in 1994 and services Baldwin, Hancock and Putnam counties.
