Youth, families offered summer opportunities

MILLEDGEVILLE —

The Baldwin County Family Connection and YES (Youth Enrichment Services) program invite local students, parents and families to learn about various summer programs and activities available during a resource fair.

“We’re hoping that families will have an idea of what their children can be involved in during the summer months as well as what they can do to prepare for the next school year,” said Janet Cavin, local Family Connection coordinator. “We will have organizations together in one place for families.”

The summer resource fair is slated from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Walter B. Williams Park.

Representatives from the High Achiever’s and YES programs will be on site to provide information and register interested students into summer programs and fall after school activities.

We’re also going to offer a couple of classes for parents to learn how to understand CRCT (Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests) scores and classes on the importance of math and reading, so their children can do activities over the summer so they don’t loose a lot of what they learned over the past school year,” Cavin said. “Classes will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and parents can choose which they would like to attend.”

Among other local organizations that are scheduled participate in the upcoming fair include the Mary Vinson Memorial Library, Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, HorseDreams Youth Ranch, Boys & Girls Club of Baldwin and Jones Counties, and the Baldwin County Department of Family and Children’s Services.

“The Recreation Department will be signing up students for their summer programs, and the Sheriff’s Office will sign up students for their C.H.A.M.P.S. program,” Cavin said. “We’re going to be in the gym with plenty of space, so if any organization in the community wants to participate in the fair they can contact me or show up.”
