Oak Hill receives tree donation to observe Georgia's Arbor Day

MILLEDGEVILLE — Georgia Power donated a Gobbler Sawtooth Oak Tree to Oak Hill Middle School’s EcoClub Tuesday in commemoration of Georgia’s Arbor Day Friday.

Purchased from the Georgia Forestry Commission, Georgia Power Compliance Specialist Taron Durden said the wildlife-friendly tree has approximately 50 seedlings in the moist preservative bag and will produce acorn fruit in roughly five to six years.

‘It will get about 50 feet tall and have a good shade span,’ he said. ‘We’d like to make a donation to the EcoClub in hopes the school will have many years of enjoyment.’

The EcoClub, consisting of around 70 students, will help to strategically locate and mark a well-saturated site to plant the tree within the next couple of weeks.

Nearly 200 Georgia Power plant employees will also receive free trees Wednesday to encourage the planting and caring of trees.
