IRWINTON — Two Wilkinson County teachers have been arrested following an investigation into alleged inappropriate contact with a student.

Cornelius Dantae Jones and Sgt. Rodney Hunter were both taken into custody Tuesday after they were questioned by authorities earlier this week as the allegations surfaced.

Jones, who taught math at the high school, has since submitted his resignation, although as of presstime Tuesday his resignation had not been formally approved by the Wilkinson County Board of Education. Hunter also resigned from his position as a teacher in the school's Air Force JROTC program, pending school board approval.

Jones was arrested early Tuesday, while news of Hunter’s arrest surfaced late Tuesday afternoon.

According to a press release issued by the school system, both incidents are related and remain under investigation by the Wilkinson County Sheriff’s Office. Wilkinson County High School and the central board office are assisting with the investigation as it nears conclusion.

Superintendent Dr. Aaron Geter Jr. said Tuesday the incident was under investigation and that the high school administration was assisting.

"Any allegation of harm against a student is taken seriously and we are working with the proper authorities as they investigate," said School Superintendent Dr. Aaron Geter Jr. in a statement release by the school system.

Jones is being held at the Wilkinson County Law Enforcement Center.
