Local unemployment claims down

MILLEDGEVILLE —

The number of people seeking new unemployment benefits in Baldwin County is inching downward, according to new figures released by the state department of labor.

The number of initial claims for unemployment insurance in Baldwin County decreased from 217 in October to 153 last month. The number of initial claims in November 2011 was 225 — 72 more claims than last month.

Overall for the year, Baldwin County's initial unemployment have decreased by 32 percent in the past year.

The rate declined because of job growth and fewer new layoffs, as indicated by first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits, state labor officials said.

The Georgia Department of Labor released the new numbers on Thursday.

Statewide, Georgia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined to 8.5 percent in November. That was down from 8.7 percent in October. The rate was 9.5 percent in November a year ago.

Statewide, there were 3.9 million jobs in November, up 9,600, or two-tenths of a percentage point, in October. Over the year, Georgia gained 61,900 jobs, or 1.6 percent, from November 2011.
