Greenway concert series returns

Sometimes the saying ‘all good things must come to an end’ is sadly true, but for every ending comes a new beginning. The Oconee River Greenway is happy to announce the return of the Second Saturday Concert Series this weekend from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Greenway.

The Second Saturday Concert series launched in April 2011 for Earth Day. It featured Mayview Road and Red Line Express. This month, the concert series will once again begin with two outstanding bands.

“This Saturday to help us bring back this great series, we’ve got two awesome bands playing,” said Sarah Hamil, Outreach Coordinator for the Twin Lakes Library System.

The sugar-punk sounds of Tha Hugs and some old school funk from Rapanui will help the community usher in the return of the concert series. Tha Hugs are comprised of Brandon Jordon, Benton Meadows, Brent Tripp, Gray Lindsey and Connor Yates. The band met in Milledgeville and formed after playing together a few times at various locations throughout the city. Because their talent meshed together instantly, they decided to form a band.

“The energy and love of performing comes through when the band is on stage together,” said Hamil.

Rapanui is a made up of Alex Furness, Bryant Johnson, Gentry Pruett and Jo ‘LaJoe’ Latour. The band meshes the classic elements of funk, soul, blues and rock-n-roll with the modern elements of hip-hop.

“Alex, Gentry and Bryant had all played together before in their hometown, St. Simons Island, so in the winter of 2012 Bryant Johnson was asked to become a full fledged member and the band became complete,” Hamil said.

Rapanui frequently plays at various venues in Milledgeville, with plans to branch out to the Athens later this spring.

The great sounds of the Second Saturday Concert will continue throughout the spring and summer.
