Goodrich scholarship applications available

MILLEDGEVILLE —

Oconee Regional Healthcare Foundation's Samuel M. Goodrich, MD, Endowed Healthcare Scholarship is now accepting applications for the 2014-2015 academic year. Application packets have been sent to area colleges and universities that offer degrees in healthcare fields of study.

Scholarships will be made in amounts ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 for the academic year.  The guidelines for the Scholarship Fund are:

• Applicants must be enrolled in a healthcare or healthcare-related field of study.

• A minimum of two years toward a program should be completed to demonstrate commitment to the particular field of study for undergraduate programs. All graduate program students meet this qualification.

• Preference will be given to Baldwin County, current or former residents, but in the absence of qualified candidates from this area, other applicant qualifications will be considered.

• The deadline for application submission is May 31, 2014.

The scholarship is in honor of Dr. Samuel M. Goodrich, an extraordinary physician who valued offering financial assistance to those entering healthcare professions.  Dr. Goodrich attended Georgia Military College Prep and Junior College before transferring to the University of Georgia where he received a bachelor's degree with majors in chemistry, physics and biology.  In 1961, he received his medical doctorate from the Medical College of Georgia where he completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology.  After serving as a major in the U.S. Army at Ft. Bragg, N.C., he was an assistant professor at MCG before opening his practice in Milledgeville in 1969.

For nearly 40 years, Goodrich was an esteemed practitioner of women's health, delivered thousands of babies and cared for his patients with a deep commitment and concern for their well-being. He was a loving husband and father of four, a role that he cherished.  In 2008, Goodrich lost a brief battle with pancreatic cancer and is greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Applications for the Scholarship Fund can be obtained by visiting www.oconeeregional.com and clicking on the “Foundation” tab.
